I love Coast Original Soap

Google Buzz

I’ve been a loyal user of Coast Original Soap since the late 70’s. It was a shock to me when the Dial Corp took it off the shelves and replaced it with their new Coast Pacific Force scent. I gobbled up every bit of the Original that I could find and basically tapped out all of the availability at internet retailers.

I now go to great lengths to find it and pray that my now 250+ bar stash will never run out.

What’s great about the Internet is that it enables people like me to find others in the same boat.

Thank you John Grove for reading my post on ABestWeb and hooking me up with 50 more bars!

And so I ask… What is your guilty pleasure and what lengths do you go through to get it?

MOUNTAIN DEW! Thank goodness, the original is still around. I think I would have to do something evil to Pepsi if they ever stopped making it. However, they have tried other “formulas” with “Baja Breeze” flavor at Taco Bell, Code Red, Live Wire, and Black. All sucked! There is only one Mountain Dew!

I did find 6 bars in a Walgreen’s a few weeks ago. It looked older, but I was glad to get it.

Coast original blue just disappeared!! It had been my favorite soap and as you know, its gone..the last ones I found were about 9 months ago at a dollar store. needless to say I bought a few packages but they are now gone. Yes, I have showered since then..I look for miracles though and hope dial realizes the winner they had and one day when I walk down the soap aisle, with my eyes peaking through my hands covering my face, in hope of being coastfully clean, I will see it again. I also have a thing for Lorna Doones. They are awesome cookies..

Hi! I totally understand your Coast original obsession. I LOVE the original myself. I called the Dial company today and the person on the telephone told me the only difference between the new version and the old version was the packaging. NONSENSE! Any ideas on why they would say that when the new formula is not even close to the old? I bought a couple of cases on ebay but am looking to purchase more. Any ideas? We should start a grass roots campaign to have the original brought back! Thanks for your post!

My response. ITS NOT THE SAME, Not even close! It F’n Sucks! I dont think i will hear back from them. I have used that coast since i was a rug rat! so sad to see it go.

My husband and I use Coast Aloe Vera soap and I just had to have it last year after I couldn’t find it in stores. I DID find it on Amazon.com and ordered a boatload. But, NOW, I cannot find it anywhere – not even on ebay. RATS!

What is with whittling away half of the bar of soap? Is this supposed to pass for some cockamaimie ergonomic design? My ass!! it's their way of charging you the same money for less soap.

DO NOT BUY IT!!

I was happy tp find this site! My family couldn't understand why Coast would change that terrific scent. That's why we buy it. There is NO scent in the new stuff, even while showering. I just wrote to the company, and told them I'm looking for a new soap if I can't have my original Coast.. Seems a German company bought Dial and a bunch of other companies. I think everybody should write to the company and complain. Life without Coast, seems depressing..

I was so happy to find other (original) coast addicts. For the last 10 years I buy a whole packet of coast which lasts about two weeks total. I don’t shower my skin with it but I hang the bars in the shower so they get wet and unleash their awesome sent. I also keep fresh bars on my nightstand , in my car and next to my computer monitor at work. It is a kind of aromatherpy for me. The smell is so awesome it makes me forget about stress or anything. I have been searching for a replacement but nothing exists. I am taking your advice and stocking up.

I am an obsessed original coast soap junkie as well. I just can’t get enough of the smell. I became a user about 10 years ago. I am so glad to know there are others out their. I was going through four packs every week. I don’t shower with it (dries my skin) but I put a bar in the shower so I can smell it while I shower. I have a bar in my car, two bars at the office (one next to my computer monitor) to sniff throughout the day and a back up in my desk drawer, a bar by my night stand for those middle of the night urges and one in the living room (just in case). I have emailed the company with no response back. It seems like if they aren’t going to make it anymore why can’t they release the ingredients to the public and maybe someone else will make it (or maybe we could make it ourselves).

the link is not working for me. I do have a question though. I just bought 48 bars of the orginal coast blue soap on ebay. When I recived it it was a very light blue and did not smelll nearly as good as the darker blue and white mix. (not pacific force) So is this the eye opener package I am looking for?

The eBay auction had ended, that's why the link stopped working. I believe the darker blue one that you're referring to is "The Eye Opener" version, which I can hardly ever get my hands on.

Larry, why after all the years that we've used caost soap, did they have to change the shape of the bar which will not stay on the shower shelf and breaks in half after only 50% of the bar is used???
It seems like the same problem we have at the food stores, everything is an ounce short or 10 instead of a dozen. Aren't we, after all these years of using the same product. entitled to the same size bars that last the life of the bar. I'm sure that someone has an answer. sudsy1279@yahoo.com

I did a side-by-side comparison of the Original Blue 4.5 oz and Pacific Force 4.5 oz (of the Walgreen's special 10-packs) and found little or no difference. The Walgreen's packaging was marked 2007. The new 2008 version with all-new graphics has a similar scent, but something different — and the new 4.0 oz bars break in 2 long before the bar is done…

I too was a Coast lover, who noticed the changeover to Pacific Force, but gave up when I could not find the Original anymore. In my recollection, two things changed – the scent is subtley different, but even more important, the quality of the lather is different. I suspect they switched to cheaper ingredients. I can now by 10 bars of Pacific Force for $4. That used to get you only 3 bars of the Original back in the day.

Unfortunately for us old timers, the massive Gen-Y generation has a love affair with strongly scented body wash, and marketers have focused on them at our expense.

I bought Coast soap, and there's less in a bar—down to 4 ounces–and, it's got a big dip in the middle and I find it's hard to hold on to when I'm in the shower—why do they have to change something when the original was fine?????

Good homemade Glycerin soaps or the oversized designer soaps are my new fetish.   You can find some good bargains on ebay (click the free shipping tab on the left) or at your local tj-maxx.

I also find Coast soap hard to hang on to and slipping out of my hands now that the center is shaved out. It also breaks in half after about 3/4 use. What's up with that? Go back to the original. In this case, change is not good. Apparently, your engineers haven't tested the new design or use it theirselves. Guess I'll have to change brands after thirty years of using a once great soap.

Whatever happened to the Coast Tropical (Splash?) something version? It sems that it was on the shelves approx. 10-13 years ago It had all those tropical fruit smells, and it was really different.
Actually there was something about that version that caused a skin allergy on my legs below the knees after awhile.. I still get itchy dryness because of it , and I can scratch until my skin bleeds if I let myself. I really need to know what is in that version so I can avoid the specific allergen. I am guessing that it was one of the tropical fruits that causes me a problem. Can anyone help me get a bar or some information on that version?
Anyway I was advised by a doctor to use Dove unscented, otherwise I would still prefer to use Coast.

There was a yellow/gold colored Coast called SunSplash or something like that. Someone was selling some vintage bars on eBay recently, but the listing is no longer there. I wonder if soap that old would have retained its fragrance?

Incredible! I returned to using Coast a few months ago after having fallen away from it for a number of years. I immediately noticed a difference for the worse; and said to myself that I won't buy this again. But I thought maybe it was just me or that Coast's "zing" just wasn't hitting me the way it did in the past.Turns out I'm not crazy as validated by all of you; and I guess my old sniffer's still working fine after all these years. Think I'll run a check on Irish Spring now, just out of curiosity. Joni was right— "You don't know what you got 'til it;s gone!!!"

GC,
My advise is do not buy the new coast soap or any other Henkel / Dial Corp. product. It is amazing the items I can live without. Try Bed Bath and Beyond for a better bath bar. I refuse to pay for non value added items and will not support Henkel. Have not bought a pair of Levis since the early 80's either, but my Walmart $8.00 denims are soft and work fine. Have not drank a Coke since the formula changed.
I got a whole list of items that I have replaced with another company's item. They do not make my house payment why should I make theirs. I want quality , value added items.

I recently got a pack of the "new" version of Coast Pacific Force (strong scented dark blue bars) and some bars were engraved with the "Coast" logo and some were engraved with "The Eye Opener" logo. Cute. Trying to keep things interesting, I guess. The way this new version's scent kinda reminds me of how Coast smelled before Dial started toying with it. Anyone else noticed the 2 difference bar engravings?

Today I am going shopping and for the first time in 30 year's I am going to buy somthig different. Can you recommend a new soap. I feel the same way about coast.

Hey Ed,

Does anyone know the difference between Pacific Force and Artic Boost? Which is better and closer to the Original Coast?

Reply

40 CoastLover August 19, 2009 at 4:16 am

Pacific Force is said to be the most like the Original, but you will notice a difference (when the Original was discontinued, the Pacific Force was marketed as its replacement). Arctic Boost is a completely different fragrance. If you can't find the Original, Pacific Force is your best bet if you're looking for that kind of fragrance.

41 Missyward August 19, 2009 at 11:48 am

People tell me that they think that Pacific Force is similar to the Original Coast. Side by side they smell different to me and the lather that Pacific Force makes is so miniscule compared to the original.

In my opinion, it's like buying a cheap knock-off of an expensive purse.

Missy, that's a GREAT analogy! Haha! Yes, there is a total difference between the 2, although you can tell Pacific Force is based on the Original. As with every other thing these days, ingredients are changing to lower costs and products downsized. Now, what are we going to do when our Original Blue stockpiles run out?? :(

thanks missy and coastlover for your replies. i want to add that Arctic boost is NEWER than Arctic Surf… Arctic Surf was close to Pacific Force (both were stron smelling)—Arctic Boost's scent is very weak… And I agree w/you both–the lather is so minimal in all the new coast soaps. i think they discontinued arctic Surf….and replaced it with the 'suckier' arctic boost.. I just wish pacific force wasn't so drying! anyhow…i recommend Irish Spring Original for a strong scent…and it's less drying too..still, it's not as good as the coast original. otherwise, I can't find any other soaps that smell nice AND strong :( ..

I had used coast soap for 20 years and was not pleased with their new design which whittled part of the bar of soap away –supposedly to fit the palm of your hand..What it really does is give you less soap for the same amount of money and what really ticks me off is when the bar of soap gets a little over half-way used –it breaks in half because it is too thin in the middle and now you have two small pieces of soap which I go not like. I called dial corporation and also sent a letter to them saying that they have lost me as a customer.I happened to find a bar of soap at Walgreens that is right beside the Coast .It is called "Ocean Fresh" and is a Walgreens brand of soap and it says on the bar of soap " Compare to Coast ".It is in the normal shape of a bar of soap and can be used right down to the last part without breaking in half .It smells great and I really like it.I recommend that you try it.

Don't you guys wish Dial would just go ahead and sell Coast to Prestige Brands?? Prestige buys older legacy brands that the major companies don't want anymore, and brings them back…Prell Shampoo, Spic & Span, etc. I wish Dial would sell it and let Prestige bring back the Original that everybody wants! Oh well…

The new Coast, shaped kind of like a kidney, is a rip-off. It took me three bars to realize it but they all broke in the same place with the same volume left forcing me to toss the two pieces before I really should have had to. Whoever took over Dial Corp are shady and unprincipled. There's a few things in this world that I absolutely despise and unscrupulous disreputable businesses are one of them. I don't intend to buy anything, let alone more Coast soap from these crooks.

I googled "coast soap shape" because the the coast bars I've been using break in two after about 4 showers. I can't stand it. I've told my wife (who does the shopping) not to buy Coast anymore. BTW, I didn't even notice that the scent had changed. But is it my imagination or does this soap bar wear out unusually fast? Anyway, I'm going to use up what I have and switch brands. What were they thinking?

53 Don October 27, 2009 at 11:01 pm

I have switched to a Walgreens brand of bar soap called " Ocean Fresh Deodorant Soap". It says on the package "Compare to Coast". This soap has a wonderful smell and it feels great on your skin.It also has a normal shape ( no curved shape).Buy one bar of this soap and try it and If you don't like it you have only spent about 59 cents. I recommend this soap.If the people making the new Coast soap want to play games–then just let them–but as for me I will not use the new Coast soap. There are alternatives.

No more Coast for me! They changed the size (style) of the bar a few years ago and now this? I believe it's engineering at it's worst! The shape of the bar will hold water thus keeping the bar soft and not lasting as long! They need engineers that are able to figure out how to make the product cheaper, not screw the customer! Are these the type of engineers comming out of college? Is there no machining engineers anymore? Dawn dish soap did the same thing,a bottle used to last me a year now it's more like 3 months! They make it thinner with a bigger hole in the bottle and more diluted! No more of that for me either! Why change a product that is (was) good? Look what happened to Coke,or Cheerios!

Awesome to see so many others like me. I was just googling around trying to figure out what was going on with coast. because I also loved the original blue, and I also am not satisfied with the pacific force "knock off" The shape is clearly designed to break, forcing us to buy more, faster. I could live with that because I sooo loved the original, IF and ONLY if the pacific force was truly the same. It's NOT. The lather is clearly weaker and the scent is weaker and somehow different!

Do these corporate tycoons really believe that the people who actually use and love the original are so naive that we will not notice the differences. I don't think so, but it is all to obvious that they simply don't care!!

Check E-bay there is 48 bars up right now for $100.00. And last week someone selling 48 for $80.00 free shipping to boot. The eye opener. Coast Blue Yes in stock and in their possession to be shipped off to anyone with the price. Keep in mind sales are as is and depending on how, where and under what condition bar soap is stored you could end up with some pretty rancid stuff. Proposed recommended shelf life for bar soap is approximately 18 months to three years. Not that it can’t r won’t keep longer this is just a guideline.

I have been stewing for the last week or so using Coast soap. I have been using it for 20 years and have always insisted on it in our home. So this morning I came online to see where I could complain and to my surprise found all you people that feel the same way I do. This new bar that’s all hollowed out to wear down and break just perturbs me. It’s like the bottom of a butter tub curves way up so the tub won’t hold nearly the volume that it looks like it should. They want to charge the same for less product. I wish they would just leave the product alone and raise the price. The new Walgreens store opens up in town in a couple weeks. I’ll be getting their brand. I only hope it isn’t made by the same people that make Coast because I don’t want to do business with people that operate like that. I hope Walgreens soap is readily available and not just something they’re getting on a special temporary buy. As with Coast when I get set on a product I stick with it so don’t screw with me !!  :)

You struck gold my friend. I went ahead and tried a bar of the Walgreen’s Ocean Fresh. It is more moisturizing than any bar of soap I’ve used in the past 5 years, smells great, and lathers really well too. I’m hooked.
