More on Cynical Marketing…

  • by Missy Ward

I just finished reading a post that my business partner, Shawn Collins had up on his blog, entitled Cynical Marketing, which really hit home.

In the post, Shawn talks about how there are some marketers out there that simply don’t get the fact that not everything they do has to revolve around making money. They forget that sometimes, it’s more important to just give back.

The timing of his post couldn’t be more relevant to me. You see, today I was approached by someone who read my post regarding me coming out of affiliate management retirement to help support breast cancer research and treatment – a cause that is very close to my heart.

This marketer had the chutzpah to ask me what my angle was and why on earth would I bust my ass to grow someone else’s company when there was absolutely nothing at stake for me.

Rather than chastising him for his ludicrous implications, I simply told him how I felt.

Giving is in my DNA and since affiliate marketing is what I do best, it seemed like a natural fit.

He followed up with a “you’re nuts.”

You know what, Mr. Cynical Marketer? Maybe I am.

But I keep very good company.

Aside from the folks that Shawn mentioned in his post that give back to the online marketing community without ever asking for a thing back (Haiko de Poel, Jr., Scott Jangro, Jim Kukral, Melanie Seery, Kellie Stevens), I can think of dozens of marketers (including Shawn, who neglected to name himself) who do the same.

Chris Brogan who takes the time to answer every single questions he’s asked on Twitter; Brian Clark who provides amazing free content on CopyBlogger.com everyday; Brian Littleton of ShareASale who takes the time to educate his merchants and affiliate marketers to both make the affiliate marketing industry better and push it forward; all of the folks that walked 60-miles with me to raise money for breast cancer research; Jeremy Schoemaker who provides dozens of case studies and tips to marketers to grow their businesses — the list goes on and on.

Now, it’s not to say that I’m averse to making money. I think I do a pretty good job at it. So do all of the people that I’ve mentioned above.

Maybe I’m just an idealist, but I believe that when one does well, there is an inherent responsibility to give back to the industries that have helped us get to where we are today and to help the less fortunate.

So, to all of the other idealists out there that give so much, with no strings attached – I salute you. Please keep doing what you’re doing. You ARE making a difference.

Luke 12:48 “From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be asked.

I’m a Sucker for Boobies

  • by Missy Ward

Through the years, many folks have asked me why I became a fanatical fundraiser for breast cancer research and treatment.

I come clean here.

(Angel – thanks for taking it easy on me during the interview) 🙂

Right now, I'm in the planning stages of this year's 60-mile walk to fight breast cancer. The date and location have not been set as of yet.

If you're interested in participating in the walk this time around, please get in touch with me at missyward /at / gmail / dot / com. I'll be happy to tell you everything you need to know.

Quaker Oatmeal Fuels it Forward

  • by Missy Ward

Many of my readers know that I’ve made it a personal mission of mine to help less fortunate families and do what I can to help eradicate the wicked that is breast cancer.

Over the last two years, I’ve helped raise nearly $150,000 for March of Dimes, Starlight Children’s Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Susan G. Komen For the Cure and the National Breast Cancer Foundation through my efforts with Affiliate Summit and AffiliateMarketersGiveBack.com.

I’ve also gotten behind many other efforts that share the same beliefs as me. Today, I am delighted to announce that I am supporting Quaker Oatmeal’s “Start with Substance” effort – a campaign which encourages consumers to feed their families and “fuel it forward” to those less fortunate.

From January 12th through February 28th, consumers can visit www.startwithsubstance.com and enter the UPC (barcode) from any variety of Quaker hot cereal and for every UPC entered, Quaker will donate a bowl of nutritious oatmeal to Share Our Strength – up to 1 million bowls of oatmeal! And that, my dear readers, is something I can embrace – especially given the fact that I’ve been a Quaker Oatmeal Maple and Brown Sugar girl since I was a kid 😉

I’ve also been chosen as one of fifteen bloggers around the country to host an Inauguration Day viewing party, in which Quaker Oats will provide a hot oatmeal bar with all the tasty toppings to my guests. It’s Quaker’s way of sharing the experience with families as they watch the ceremony and embark on a fresh start with the new First Family.

I will be hosting the party at Izea’s corporate office in downtown Orlando (150 N. Orange Avenue, Suite 412) beginning at 10:00am on Inauguration Day (1/20). I can’t thank Ted Murphy enough to allow me to use their office space as we take in this historical event. It’s sure to be an amazing experience.

I am also very grateful to Quaker Oatmeal as they will be donating two cases of oatmeal as part of their “Start with Substance” campaign, to Rock for Hunger, a local community effort that I've grown very fond of.

If you would like to attend the Inaugural Viewing please get in touch with me at missyward@gmail.com or on Twitter at Twitter.com/MissyWard. If you're on Facebook, you can also RSVP here: http://cli.gs/quakerrsvp.

I also encourage you all to visit www.StartWithSubstance.com to learn about Share Our Strength’s mission to end childhood hunger and share your own oatmeal tips and photos with the QuakerMan!
