Help Us Fight Breast Cancer by Exercising

  • by Shawn_Collins

We just donated $24,311 to fight breast cancer from the Race to Affiliate Summit East 2013 and now it's time for affiliate marketers to start over again with battling breast cancer through exercise.

Affiliate Summit West 2014Affiliate Summit has created a dailymile Challenge where we will donate $1 to benefit the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in support of the Affiliate Marketers Give Back team for each mile cycled, run, swam, or walked.

dailymile syncs with Garmin (205, 305, 310xt, 405, 405cx), Nike+ device and iPhone app, as well as a number of iPhone and Android clients.

I like RunKeeper myself, because it works with my Withings scale and Pebble watch, but it doesn't automatically sync to dailymile.

So, like me, you can manually enter your exercise efforts.

In order to participate in dailymile activities, you will need to friend me on dailymile and I will invite you to the challenge.

Do you accept the Race to Affiliate Summit East 2013 Challenge?

Affiliate Summit West 2014 is taking place January 12-14, 2014 in Las Vegas.

The participant with the most total miles at the end of the challenge will receive a VIP Pass to Affiliate Summit East 2014.

2nd to 5th place finishers will each receive a Networking Plus Pass to Affiliate Summit East 2014, and 6th to 10th place finishers will each receive a Networking Pass to Affiliate Summit East 2014.

I am still a little bitter that I didn't crack the top ten the last time around, so prepare to battle me if you're looking for a top spot.

Please note that all information you provide as part of the contest is public and may be used by Affiliate Summit in our marketing efforts for this event.

May I Have Your Support on Memorial Day?

  • by Missy Ward

Memorial Day is not just the unofficial start of summer. It is a day set aside to pay respect to the service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

We remember and honor all who have served, memorialize those who have been lost and say a prayer for all those currently protecting our nation. [Special shout-outs to my buds, Matthew, Dean and Freddie who are currently serving – you guys are my heroes!]

As I prepare for next weekend’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Chicago, Memorial Day also evokes thoughts of a fragile army fighting for their lives on a different front line. They fight to survive while trying to manage the rest of their daily lives – working and doing the best they can to take care of their families. Their wounds are not from bullets, but from chemicals, radiation and surgeries.

Nearly 40,000 moms, daughters, sisters, wives, companions and friends die on this battle ground every year and nearly 300,000 new people will face the enemy.

I’ve witnessed too much suffering and lost too many friends from this wicked adversary.

And, in as much as I pray for a day where our sons and daughters never need to go off to war, I also can imagine life without breast cancer – a day where all women won’t have to worry if she will be the one in eight women diagnosed with this horrible disease.

That is why I am doing it again — For the 7th year in a row, I’ll be leading the AffiliateMarketersGiveBack.com team for our 40 mile walk in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, taking place in Chicago on June 1st and 2nd.

As a team, we’ve raised over $500,000.00 for various charities that support breast cancer awareness, treatment and research during the last seven years. For this walk alone, we’ve raised over $50,000.00 and we’re not stopping!

I’m most excited about this year's walk as my son Alex, has been chosen to be part of the volunteer Avon Walk Youth Crew during our walk. He will be getting up at 4:00am each day to fill up water bottles, stock and clean up rest stations and cheer on all of the Avon Walkers for 40 miles and provide some entertainment during the evenings while they’re all camping out in Wellness Village. Here's some video footage of the Avon Youth Crew:

I’m incredibly proud of my son for supporting my efforts to fight Breast Cancer throughout the years and for taking it upon himself to apply for the Avon Walk Youth Crew program. In addition, as part of the program, he was required to raise $500.00 and I’m excited to share that he has already raised over $2,000.00. {Go Alex, Go Alex!}

Missy Ward Avon Walk for Breast CancerThis year, I set a personal fundraising goal of $45,000.00. That amount will provide more than 200 uninsured women with access to life-saving tests, such as mammograms and bone scans to check for breast cancer or to see if it has spread or access to chemotherapy treatments.

I have already raised over $42,000 towards my goal and I (and the rest of those 200 women) could really use your support to help me reach my goal.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to either my son Alex’s or my Avon Walk for Fundraising accounts in any denomination you are able to by using the links below:

  • Alex: http://www.alexavonwalk.com
  • Missy: http://iwalkforboobies.com

Then please follow us along on our journey as we take on Chicago next week on http://www.affiliatemarketersgiveback.com.

May the list of fighters in all armies be much shorter by next Memorial Day.

Shine on!

3 Step Guide to Self Care for Work At…

  • by Missy Ward

mimwTell me I’m not the only one who takes care of herself last.

After a particularly harried day last month, I found myself staring at the pile of work on my desk, and I could only think about how tired and burnt out I felt.

It happens to the best of us — even the ones who love what they do for a living.

Parents notoriously take care of everyone but themselves, and that’s especially true for work at home parents. Yet, our businesses, relationships and health suffer when we ignore our needs.

In order to attempt to establish balance and order in my life, I came up with the three steps below to use as a guide. I definitely haven't figured it all out yet, but I'm trying!

1. Figure out what you really need.

You know you need a break, but what does that look like? For me, during the day, I love being outside — whether it's at the beach or simply taking a walk. In the evenings, I love trying new restaurants and sampling a wine I've not yet tried.

For you, a pedicure or massage, an evening alone with a good book or a night out with your real live friends may be the prescription that makes you feel relaxed, renewed and rested.

So, how do you figure out what you need? Think about the perfect day, and list what you would do, where you would go and who you would see. That dream day includes the activities you need to include in your schedule as you care for yourself.

2. Prioritize and schedule self-care.

Most of us have strict deadlines. Miss one, and risk losing a valuable customer. So, why are we negligent in scheduling a deadline for ourselves? By not taking care of ourselves, we jeopardize our health, relationships and income.

Open up that Google calendar of yours and make an appointment at least once a day to do something nice for yourself, even if it’s only a 20 minute nap, a short walk around the block or a quick telephone chat with a friend.

In addition to your daily break, schedule a longer break once a week, and take at least one day a week off.  Don't even walk through your home office door.  Turn off your phone, shut down that iPad and simply recharge.

Yes, your deadlines loom, but you won’t be able to function at your best if you’re burned out. Prioritize and schedule self-care!

3. Set boundaries.

If you struggle to say no, join the crowd. I’m a sucker for saying yes when my kids need a ride somewhere or when a client asks for a last minute help. Then, I wonder why I’m working past midnight trying to get everything done.

Self-care is not a luxury. It is a necessity that I need to do for myself. I’m learning to set boundaries and say no, and I hope you can too. The next time someone asks for something you don’t have time to do, try this technique.

  • Pause and say, “Let me check my schedule.”
  • Close your eyes and envision yourself enjoying your favorite free time activity.
  • Quietly but firmly tell that person that you have other plans.
  • Give them a time when you would be able to accommodate them or suggest two or three alternative providers.
  • Move on with your day and reward yourself for saying no and firmly sticking to your boundaries.

The nurturing, protecting and parenting nature in us wants to take care of everyone. As a work at home parent, make yourself a priority and find the balance and order that improves your relationships, health and job performance.

I hear my morning walk calling. Which self-care step will you implement first?

  • by Missy Ward

I'm excited to announce that Affiliate Summit, the premier affiliate marketing conference and tradeshow, will be providing $1,000 scholarships to up to 10 U.S. college students this summer.

As part of the ongoing education initiative of the conference, Affiliate Summit will be providing scholarships to U.S. college students.

These Affiliate Marketing Scholarships are only open to currently enrolled students at a college or university in the United States.

There will be as many as 10 scholarships awarded of $1,000 each.

In order to submit for a chance to receive the scholarship, qualified entrants must submit an essay of 250-500 words below answering the question, “What is your biggest frustration with online shopping and how would you suggest fixing it?” by June 1, 2013.

Scholarship entries must be submitted at http://www.affiliatesummit.com/affiliate-marketing-scholarship.
Winners will be contacted by August 1, 2013.

About Affiliate Summit:
Over the 10 years and dozens of events in the Affiliate Summit portfolio, each successive year has been bigger than the last, despite years of challenging economic times.

This trend shows no signs of changing with the upcoming Affiliate Summit East 2013, taking place August 18-20 in Philadelphia.

The top sponsorships are sold out for Affiliate Summit East 2013, and many of the smaller sponsorships are already gone.

Also, the exhibit hall and Meet Market are quickly filling up, and both are expected to sell out again.
This three day conference will include an exhibit hall with affiliates, merchants, vendors, and networks, as well as multiple tracks of educational sessions covering the latest trends and information from affiliate marketing experts.

The keynotes for Affiliate Summit East 2013 will be Rae Hoffman, CEO of PushFire; Dr. Randal Pinkett, Chairman and CEO of BCT Partners, as well as a philanthropist, author, and season 4 Winner of NBC's The Apprentice; and Wil Reynolds, Founder of SEER Interactive.
