Andrew Wee Gets the Skinny on Affiliate Summit

  • by Missy Ward

Last week, Andrew Wee of WhoIsAndrewWee.com interviewed Shawn Collins and I for his Friday Podcast Series. We got into the nitty-gritty of Affiliate Summit and our strategy for GeekCast.fm, FeedFront Magazine and AffStat.

Shawn provided some information on how to get started as a podcaster, while I unveiled plans for my new podcast, “The Spew,” that will debut on Geekcast.fm later this month.

We also discussed my rationale for selecting the DIYThemes Affiliate Program (ThesisAffiliates.com) to manage and a glimpse into what's in store for Affiliate Summit 2009 East taking place in NYC, this coming August.

This is the second time this year that I've been lucky enough to make it onto Andrew's Friday Podcast… I've decided to shoot for a hat trick if Andrew lets me. 😉

Ignite Orlando 2009

  • by Missy Ward

Ignite Orlando took place on March 4th at Slingapours in Downtown Orlando.

For those unfamiliar with the Ignite, it's a fast-paced educational and networking event for geeks. Basically speakers get up on stage and have five minutes to talk about their topic. The interesting part is that they have to present using no more than 20 slides that rotate automatically after 15 seconds. It makes it very entertaining to watch.

Some of the topics that were covered were Obama's Stimulus in Orlando, An Intro to OAuth, Freelancing in the New Economy, OpenID vs. Facebook Connect vs. Google Friend Connect, NerdaPalooza Event, Using Newl Media Tools to Make Your Community a Cooler Place to Live, Programming in Not Pretty, CoWorking in Orlando, Building Referrals from Your Existing and Previous Clients and more.

I really dig the 5-minute format because I can get the nuts and bolts of a topic and it fits nicely with my attention span 😉

Half-way through the sessions, there was a contest where attendees were grouped together to make a bridge out of drinking straws. Teams competed against each other and the strength of the bridge was measured by the number of rolls of pennies that could be placed on it, before it collapsed.

Ignite was started in Seattle back in 2006, by Brady Forrest and Bre Pettis and has since spread across the world. If you have the opportunity to attend one in your area, it will definitely be worth your while.

Here are some pictures of the event…

Busy Travel Year, Indeed

  • by Missy Ward

I get a lot of requests asking me what conferences I recommend to folks that are into affiliate marketing, search marketing and social media.

There's certainly a lot to choose from and since every dollar counts these days, I decided to put a list together of conference and tradeshows that I personally recommend and plan on attending this year.

If I run out of steam based on this schedule, my wonderful business partner Shawn will be there in my place.

PubCon South – March 11-13 – Austin
SXSW Interactive Show – March 13-18 – Austin, TX
Search Engine Strategies – March 23-27 – New York
BarCamp Orlando – April 18 – Orlando
Ad:Tech – April 21-23 – San Francisco
SOBCon – May 1-3 – Chicago
Inbound Marketing Summit – May 27-28 – Dallas
Internet Retailer – June 15-18 Boston
Linkshare Symposium East – June 22-23 – New York
BlogHer – July 24-25 – Chicago.
Affiliate Summit East 2009 – August 9-11 – NYC*
Gnomedex – August 20-22 – Seattle
Avon Breast Cancer 40-mile Walk – September 12-13 – Los Angeles
IzeaFest – October 1-4 Orlando
SMX East – October 5-7 – New York
a4Uexpo – October 13-14 – London
BlogWorldExpo – October 15-17 – Las Vegas
Ad:Tech NY – November 4-6 – New York
Social Fresh Cruise – November 12-16

If you're going to be at any of these events, let's make plans to meet up. I just love seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

If you're not going to make any of these, look for coverage of the events in upcoming issues of FeedFront Magazine.

Lastly, if you know of an established conference not listed here, that you think I should be attending, let me know. I'm always looking for new opportunities.

*Shameless plug. But hey, it's my blog, I can do whatever I want.

Happy New Year from Missy Ward

  • by Missy Ward

Wow, I can’t believe 2008 has passed this quickly and how much has changed in the world.

While everyone is getting their final shopping in, prettying up their homes for company or headed to the airport to visit family, I’m getting ready to enjoy a family vacation on Royal Caribbean.

My oldest son has asked that I limit my “online time” to 1-hour per day during our vacation. I have assured him that I can do that for him, as long as he limits his “PSP time” to the same.

On that note, this will be my last “live” blog post of the year (although other previously planned posts will pop up) ;-). I figured there’s no better time to thank all of the people who have helped me throughout 2008. While there are too many to list individually, you all know who you are – and I appreciate you more than you know.

This has been an unbelievable year for me, both professionally and personally. Even though we are in uncharted waters, I look forward to 2009 with great anticipation.

While the economic situation is obscure, I feel that now is not the time for me to veer off course. It is my hope that through consistency and innovation, I will be ready to fly when the economic cylinders start kicking in. My holiday wish is that my friends, family and business associates also recognize the opportunities at hand, even in this downward market.

My resolution this year is to not set any New Year’s Resolutions this year. 😉 Rather, I have put a plan in place that will continue to transform my personal and business life for the better. Gone are the drastic changes and here to stay are bite-sized goals that I can live with – most of which wrap around enjoying my kids, making money and having fun.

I wish you all a joyous holiday season and may 2009 be the very best year of your life.
