Missy Ward of Affiliate Summit Exposed on Adotas.com

I had the opportunity to sit down with Gavin Dunaway, Senior Editor of Adotas.com to talk about the upcoming Affiliate Summit East 2011 in August and our plans for the conference series overall.

Lots of fun stuff was discussed, including a venue switch to a far-off destination (#ASOuterSpace20); what my favorite Affiliate Summit location is and the proper wine to drink when listening to my favorite band, AC/DC.

Pass This Info on to an Affiliate Manager

  • by Shawn_Collins

There is one thing that a lot of affiliate managers don’t know how to do, and that is to be an affiliate.

This kid knows more about affiliate marketing than you

While it is not a requirement for most affiliate manager positions, I think it ought to be.

How better to understand and assist affiliates with the many pitfalls and challenges that come with being an affiliate?

So let’s get started, affiliate manager. I’ll take you through the steps I go through to create an affiliate site myself:

  • Introduction
  • Pick a Topic for Your Site
  • Narrow Down Your Potential Topics
  • How to Create Content for Your Site
  • Become an Expert on Your Topic
  • Make “Ask the Expert” Videos
  • Google Alerts as a Content Source
  • Brainstorm a Domain Name
  • Register a Domain Name
  • Website Hosting
  • Setting Up Your Hosting Plan
  • Connecting Your Domain to Your Host
  • Installing WordPress
  • Installing a WordPress Theme
  • Configuring WordPress
  • WordPress Plugins
  • Using Email to Drive Traffic to Your Site
  • Create an Email List
  • Add an Email Form to Your Site
  • RSS to Email
  • Email Newsletters
  • Email Follow-Up Series
  • Secure Your Social Media Names
  • Register Your Name on Twitter
  • Create a Facebook Page
  • Register Your User Name on Social Media Sites

You probably noticed there is no mention of applying to affiliate programs, putting up links, etc. That’s because you have to provide some unique value proposition and build an audience before you can monetize.

Get working on that and the affiliate part of it comes next.

  • by Missy Ward

The Race to Affiliate Summit East 2011, a dailymile challenge where Affiliate Summit will donate $1 to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade for each mile run or walked (up to $5,000) through the challenge, is running through 07/31/2011.

There are currently 46 folks involved in the challenge, and the top ten runners have already tallied 1,425 miles.

Overall, there have been 2,273 miles run by all of the participants, so it’s $2,273 raised so far.

Shawn Collins is at #5 right now (see my dailymile profile) with 141 miles – catch him if you can.

Here are the top ten runners, as of July 17, 2011.

dailymile syncs with Garmin (205, 305, 310xt, 405, 405cx), Nike+ device and iPhone app, as well as a number of iPhone and Android clients.

You can also manually enter your running and walking efforts.

In order to participate in dailymile activities, you will need to friend Shawn on dailymile and he will invite you to the challenge. The challenge is going through 07/31/2011.

Get more details at http://www.affiliatesummit.com/2011/05/23/race-to-affiliate-summit-east-2011/.

AskMissyWard.com: Facebook Page Special Offers

  • by Missy Ward

Today's AskMissyWard.com question comes from Anna at VSO Software:

“When I clicked on “like” on your Missy Ward Facebook Page, I landed on a page with the link to a special offer. That's awsome. How do you do this ? I have a welcome tab, but how do I make people land on another page with my discount when they click on “like” ?”

I am using the paid version of a Facebook App called Tradable Bits which allows you to create a customized Facebook Page quickly and easily. You can upload images, embed Twitter and video content using their simple tools. Their templates have allowed me to easily create a Welcome Tab, an “Exclusive” Tab and other html-based Tabs within my Facebook page in minutes. You can then select whatever Tab you decide to be your default tab that you want visitors to see.

They offer an ad-supported free version, but I opted to go with the ad-free small-business version which allows me to use the App on up to 3 of my pages.

Here's a quick video showing how easy it is to use:

Let me know how it works out for you.
