I love Coast Original Soap
I've been a loyal user of Coast Original Soap since the late 70's. It was a shock to me when the Dial Corp took it off the shelves and replaced it with their new Coast Pacific Force scent. I gobbled up every bit of the Original that I could find and basically tapped out all of the availability at internet retailers.
I now go to great lengths to find it and pray that my now 250+ bar stash will never run out.
What's great about the Internet is that it enables people like me to find others in the same boat.
Thank you John Grove for reading my post on ABestWeb and hooking me up with 50 more bars!
And so I ask… Is Coast your guilty pleasure and what lengths do you go through to get it?

The new coast has a good smell to it, but those bars lol. Milking customers. Still what are you going to do? It’s never going back to those big full great lathering bars 🙁
Coast soap is not the same anymore. It doesn’t lather up like it did.
I grew up using coast and it’s not the same.
I just found a bunch of the old coast at bed bath and beyond for a mere $2.47 for a set of 3 bars. amazing find so i bought 60 bars..yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been searching high and low for the original coast soap to no avail…it was packaged in soft packaging instead of the boxes it is in now. Also it was striped with blue and white and now its a solid blue color. It burns me skin so i think the formula has changed too. Feels like acid on my skin so i threw it all away…
I am 74 years old and have loved Coast soap since its berginning. I will grudgingly use the new product but it does not thrill like the original. I don't use social media and can only communicate with you this way. Now it is even difficult to find the watered down Coast. Do you have any suggestions? How do I buy some?
Was looking for it. Coast was my favourite for decades. It came out in Oklahoma before south Texas and when I went up there I bought a ton and brought it down to Texas. I then lived overseas for several years and was just now looking for it on Amazon and was surprised that they don't make it anymore.
Why change a good thing? They don't advertise soap etc any more so no wonder no one knows it's missing.
Congratulations on finding some!
Thomas
Hello Missy I trust all is well. I had watched your video a couple years ago and thought you would like to hear my story. I also have a love time love afair with Coast Deodorant soap and have been using it since the '70s. I live in Milton, Ontario, Canada where coast Original Scent has gone the way of the Dodo for several years. When I realized that supplies where deminishing here I when on a scavenger hunt and bought up all the bars that I could. That was at least 6 years ago. I have a friend who is a long haul trucker whom I had keeping an eye out for me in the U.S. who found me the odd package of bars in his travels but he also says that supplies have dissapeared. I opened my last bar in November and have been without for a while now.The good news is that yesterday my Girlfriend was shopping at a major grocery store in our area and came across a sale bin of 3 Bar Packages of "Coast Classic Scent – The Eye Opener" clearance priced at $1.00 a package. She texted me asking if I wanted some and I told her that I wanted it all. So I am now the very proud owner of 84 – 3 packs, 252 Bars.
I found another listing for original coast and the sun spray scent on ebay;
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121404218825. You’ve got ’til the 13th to bid on these.
In case you’re still looking for some the old version coast I happened come across these listings while browsing ebay; http://www.ebay.com/itm/151350128647
http://www.ebay.com/itm/191240596282. You’ve got til the 15th to bid on these of you’re interested 🙂
I just noticed that High Ridge Brands (the current owner/maker of Coast Soap) has released a new scent: Coast Emerald Burst, The Eye Opener with Moisturizing Aloe in bars and body wash. Not sure if it will be anything like Coast Max w/Aloe, which I loved and was discontinued back in 2004 or so. Here’s a link to the product page on the High Ridge Brands website:
http://www.coastsoap.com/product/coast-emerald-burst/
I placed an order for some on Drugstore.com – it doesn’t look like many retailers will be carrying it at the time. Now if we could just convince them to release SunSpray scent again!
I don’t know about new vs old Coast. I was a user of Ocean Fresh purchased at Walgreens in the US. The label said it was made in Canada. I loved it, but Walgreen stopped carrying it. I tried Coast, but the scent made me ill. Really wish I could find the Ocean Fresh bars again.
Hi,
Doing some searching for Walgreens discontinued soap, I came across your email posted on MissyWard.com? and wondered if you had any success tracking it down. My personal preference was the Clean and Fresh Irish Spring Generic type that was sold along side the Ocean Fresh. I keep hitting dead ends and can’t seem to find the Mfg. in Canada and where else they sell it. I first found it at Krogers under their brand and then they discontinued it. That’s when I found it at Walgreens. If you could pass along any info, it would be appreciated, and I will do the same. Good Luck! Dan
The new, soft, curved version designed to run out sooner = Worst Product Redesign Ever.
Add my name to the list of Old Coast users…can’t find anything even remotely similar anymore in Canada. Was planning to take a trip to Buffalo to stock up, but it sounds like the “new and improved ” version by the new company is crap….Why can’t these companies learn? ( Remember “New” Coke?..)
Coast was an amazing prouct. Note to the “Idea” people in these companies…if it’s a good product leave it alone…go try to score brownie points with something new instead. Bring back he REAL Coast soap PLEASE. You obviously have a ready built market for it. Lose the Coast Wannabe’s.
It really pisses me off that they took a chunk out of the bar and tried to say it was ergonomic or something like that == What a rip == When I used the old Coast it felt like it tingled or fizzed a little == The new shit sucks == And that company brags about how they acquired ( sorry if I spelled it wrong ) 14 or 15 companies or products == What they should have said is they RUINED not acquired these companies == I think someone should find out the original ingrediants and make the old Coast == I would buy it and gladly pay more == I would pay 5 or 6 bucks a bar == $ 10 if I had to === Honestly I would pay $ 25 for a bar if anybody wants to sell me one , just for that good old clean fresh feeling for a little while ====
I have 2 vintage bars in the wrappers. I agree, the new Coast is way off. I’m willing to sell the bars if anyone wants them.
Not only did they ruin the original amazing fragrance that I loved waking up to every morning, they also shrunk it down from a nice big long- lasting block to a this wafer that breaks after just a few uses. And even THAT version is impossible to find- it seems less and less retailers are carrying it at all, and none of my usual spots have it at all anymore:(
Your love of Coast Original Scent is like mine of Irish Spring Original, so I can understand your dismay! That would be like the company trying to pass off the moisture blast Irish Spring as the “original.” Close, but not the same. I’m really intrigued now as to how the Original Coast smells (I’ve only used Pacific Force scent). What is the difference? –Also, have you considered writing a letter to Dial, maybe get a bunch of signatures? I wonder why they stopped making a good product! Best of luck in finding more. 🙂
I was freaking out and here i thought it was all in my head. For a few years now I’ve wanting to look up info on the coast soap but i keep forgetting. Today i remembered to google it and I came across this forum. I was raised on coast soap since for ever but I noticed the change on the soap, thought i was just freaking out and here I see you guys talking about the original soap, this and that. Naw but I never really follow any news about a company being sold or the like but i did notice the difference in the coast soap. Actually i went to lookup info if todays coast soap safe to use – just because i noticed the difference. I googled it and found nothing (this forum) about the soap being unsafe so i guess i keep using it but just sometimes i be feeling to change soaps and try others. Just that it doesnt feel the same and cant explain it….. sun tin wong – chow chow lol
LOL so funny becuz I went straight to the comments to read them and posted first then I watched your video. lol wow dumb dumb huh? Anyways thank you for explaining it – NOW it makes alot more sense. I wish i could get my hands on the original ones too and i looked around my area with no luck. I am too picky about my soap (original coast) so your not alone. And here i thought i was a weirdo looking up info on my coast soap. lol But boy i do feel the difference – I think it was more like my body was the one that told me “hey it feels different” and dont like it but i still use it. I tried others with no luck only to come back to coast – It feels like the eye opener went away – thou – lol.

I bought some SunSpray Coast off eBay a few years ago but I can’t use it….I know I’ll never find it again!
Also, I noticed that the “Throwback” packaging is gone at Walmart here now and they are using a new package with “The Eye Opener” on it again as well as the waterdrops on the packaging. Very 80’s.
Does anyone have any SunSpray Coast stockpiled (the yellow bar)?
Please contact me.
What is wrong with this company so many people want the Sunspray coast and the original coast yet the won’t bring it back, all they do is fool us with the old packaging, what a tease. Boycott all their products until the bring it back.
yeah coast throwback
So is the “new” original labeled coast actually the original coast? I reacted to the body wash bad! i just want the original! Can i get it!
Walmart here has a bunch of retro bars…is the real or the new junk?
thanks!
Are you having any luck with getting this brought back? I have a call in to the company! will advise!
I am down to my very last bar of original blue Coast and I am almost freaking out!!! I have been using Coast for as long as I can remember. I am in Canada and I noticed a few years ago that it was getting harder and harder to find. Whenever I came across a store that had some in stock, I would stock up. But alas, my last bar is sitting used in my shower and I don’t know what I will do. I have tried what feels like every other brand, and I have thrown them all away after just one use. In most cases, the scents of these various soaps just make me gag!
Just wants to add my little forlorn complaint 😉

Funny I stumbled over this!!!!! I just decided to see if Coast made a body wash, as I had a NY minutw tonight to do so and…. low and behold I find out that there is a new scent>? ewwwwwwww So YES I must be a lucky one in that it is still in the supermarkets out here. I did not see the “new” pacific soap and am not looking for atoher bar of soap to put is my husbands are in the bathroom> LOL do they make an original scent in a body wash? What is wrong with this picture!!!! This has got to be some sick world we live in. Go figure, I do notr recall an anti bacterial version either. I am NOT into antibacterial soaps. OH YIKES it is a sad story.

GREENWICH, CT — April 3, 2012 — Brynwood Partners VI L.P. announced today that its portfolio company, High Ridge Brands Co., has acquired the global rights to the Coast personal cleansing brand from The Dial Corporation, a subsidiary of the Henkel group. Based in Stamford, CT, High Ridge Brands is majority-owned by Brynwood VI. Terms and conditions of the transaction, which closed on March 31st, will not be disclosed.
In a simultaneous transaction, Brynwood VI portfolio company, Golden Sun, Inc. (d/b/a Newhall Laboratories), acquired the rights to the L.A. Looks, Dep Sport, Zero Frizz and Thicker Fuller Hair portfolio of hair care brands, the Soft & Dri female deodorant brand and the Pure & Natural liquid hand soap and body wash brand from Henkel.
Originally launched in 1975, Coast is an iconic personal cleansing brand and known as “The Eye Opener” for awakening users through an invigorating and refreshing early morning shower experience. Coast is available in both bar soaps (Pacific Force and Artic Boost) and body washes (Pacific Force and Urban Fuel). Coast products are widely distributed in the U.S. through leading retailers in the food, drug, mass and dollar channels.
“We are delighted to announce the acquisition of the Coast brand,” said James Daniels, President and CEO of High Ridge Brands. Mr. Daniels continued, “the Coast brand has a very loyal consumer following and we look forward to bringing renewed attention and energy to Coast.”
“We are excited to make another acquisition in the personal care space and to add to our very successful High Ridge Brands business. In just over a year, we have created a leading personal care company with well-known consumer brands including Zest, Alberto VO5, Rave and now Coast. We will continue to manage our investment by growing all of these brands through renewed marketing and product innovation,” said Dario Margve, Managing Partner of Brynwood VI and Chairman of High Ridge Brands.
Brynwood Partners has developed a unique niche of being the lower middle market firm of choice for corporate divestitures. In its 28-year history, Brynwood Partners has acquired 30 corporate brands from 13 different corporate sellers, including the Henkel acquisitions. Since January 2011, the firm has successfully completed the acquisitions of 14 corporate brands in five separate transactions.
“On behalf of Brynwood Partners and High Ridge Brands, I would like to thank the Henkel team for its partnership in closing the acquisition of the Coast brand,” said Henk Hartong III, Senior Managing Partner of Brynwood Partners.
What’s all this whining about Coast’s new shape? So what if it breaks after only a few times! You take the broken part and still use it! My goodness what pansies! The soap breaks, but isn’t ‘broken’. It still lathers, right? So use it! The scent is still in it, right? So use it! Me, being a hobby artist, I’ve taken soap remnants and practice soap carving shapes to put in artwork. I just bought a three pack of Coast. I took them out of the pack and put them in my linen closet. Why? The soap hardens a little so it WON’T break as fast. Try that instead of growling over something petty. You can just as easily be on the street and believe me, I suppose even a shard of soap, any soap, would feel like a pound of gold. So if your kidney shaped soap breaks don’t toss away two perfectly good pieces, use ’em! Take your soap out of the package and leave it where you store it, it’ll harden a little more, it’ll last longer. It’s worked for me.
I read your comment. I am like the other people. I believe the company makes it that way because actually you are thinking your getting a full bar like other soap brands but your not. I bet this saves the company millions. I am a lover of Coast Soap but I wish they would make a bar like a bar should be. I would love to see your artwork.
Coast has just been sold to a new company. Check out this article: http://www.gcimagazine.com/business/marketers/acquisitions/145925325.html
I’m down to my last 3 bars of original blue. I bought tons of it 3 years ago and never thought this day would come. So you can imagine my rising anxiety level LOL. I saw the throwback packaging and thought my prayers were answered. Then I compared the ingredients list and see that this is the same old pacific force. They now use Talc to simulate the sudsiness of the original blue which had no Talc.
Sad. Since I’m not going to be able to buy more Original Blue, I have been experimenting with body washes. How do the kids use that stuff? It’s exactly like washing your skin with shampoo! Gross! Not sure what my next move will be.
Was real excited to happen to see the Throwback version of coast at store the other day I bought a pack thinking it was the Coast of my youth! But Dial is just pulling a fast one on consumers as it is just Throwback PACKAGING. It is just the Pacific Force in old packaging, not the original Eye Opener for back in the day. Easily confirmed just by smelling both the Throwback and PR side by side. Exact same, and NOT the original Coast since Pacific Force came out after Original Coast as a spin-off.
they did the same thing with Irish Spring soap. except now they claim they make the original in body wash form – it’s different, and the body wash of the regular smells different from the regular bar soap. these companies drive us crazy!
I’ve never used the original coast, but I just bought some Pacific Force. I guess it’s because I don’t know the original, but I think this version smells okay.
I remember using Coast after 2000 when I was young.
We bought some between then, and it broke me out in skin rash like I’d been scrubbed with steel-wool.
I bought some “Coast Throwback” at Bi-Lo last week… I loved it. It doesn’t break me out, and it took me back to early 2000
I’m 16, and I want my childhood back!!
I love coast, and it is my favorite soap, but I don’t understand why they did away with th sunspray from back in the 80’s. That used to be all I would buy and then one day I noticed it was dissapearing from the shelves and I have never seen it again. It is dissapointing.
I just bought 2 of the 8 bar packs at Mars Grocery Store for $4.59/ea.
I must have lived in a test area because I remember using this in 1967. Probably not possible but I know I had my grandmother sending me Coast when I was in Viet Nam in 1970. Anyway, I’d suggest that you go to http://www.coastsoap.com/ and go to the contact us button (on the bottom) and send them a message that you want them to keep making this. I already did.
Plz,
Bring back the real Coast…not that imitation…
Darn i boycott Wal-Mart….anywhere else?
Hey Missy,
Just found something at Rite Aid which seems to suggest that Dial is trying to bring back Coast the Eye Opener it is THROWBACK celebrating 35 years newly packaged in 2011. I bought the one pack that was available not sure if you still look for them.
Yes I just saw some of this at Wal Mart….is this the original stuff? I came to this site expecting a flurry of activity….
YUP! WalMart. Has the throwback limited supply. I just bought 20 8 bar packs. As soon as they stock it I will get more! 2.97 for 8 bars! IT IS THE SMELL I REMEMBER! I showered twice tonight!
Someone alot more computter smart then me should start a cause thing on facebook. Let the people pick witch coast they want. lol i would but not that smart on computer.
Hey Robert,
Great idea — I just started a Facebook Fan Page called “Bring Back Coast Original Soap” here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bring-Back-Coast-Original-Soap/144979265585469?v=wall Feel free to “Like” the page and share your story!
I was surprized that so many people feel the way I do. My husband used the eyeopener blue marbled Coast soap for years. I have allergies to most smells and this soap doesn’t bother me. Because our jobs keep us away from each other for weeks at a time, when I want to feel close to him, I use the soap because its light clean and fresh smell reminds me of him. We have been hunting all over Texas to get the original soap bar.
Hello everyone I live Michigan and I cant find the sun spray coast soap anywhere. I’ve looked and looked and its like it never existed. I would like to contact the manufacturer to see if I could purchase directly from them but theres no contact information to go to. If some one know where I can purchases a few bars from please email me
Thank- you
Lola, SunSpray Coast has been discontinued since the 90’s.
There is a spot at the bottom of the “Throwback Coast” page where you can contact the manufacturer. I left an impassioned plea to bring back the original scent…the throwback isn’t the original scent, just the original shape (in my opinion). Everyone who wants the original back should leave them messages, maybe someone will listen. I told them I would buy in a lifetime supply if the original comes back!
Hey all,
Don’t fall for the Coast Throwback version. Great old packaging — same lousy new version of soap.
Waaaaah!
to late, bought 4 packs of the throw back packs thinking finnally real soap again. Only to find while i was showering it has a oily feel. was thinking maybe maybe it was just me. Now that i found this page i see the back of my mind has came forth, and its not just me. Could you send me the link to where i can cry to the dail company too. it really suck they pulled that.
I just found out that the original coast is gone… a sad day for me, no wonder I could never find it. Hopefully Dial see’s that bringing back a original can be profitable if marketed properly like Coco Cola Classic….
Coast was always my favorite bar soap from the late 70’s up thru the mid-90’s. Then I started using that shower gel crap. I’ve been back to bar soaps for several years and I am not a fan of the new Coast reformulation at all. 🙁 I do have some old sealed Coast in my possession that I cherish but I will never use, including: three bars of SunSpray Scent from the 80’s and a bar of original Coast that is complete with a mailer box and brochure from 1974. It was when Coast was introduced and it was mailed out. 🙂
I have been a coast fan,for a long time, but i always didn’t buy, this wonderful smelling soap,of course with shower gel being so popular,i got sucked into switching from bar soap,to shower gel,but i went back to bar soap, and when i made the switch,i didn’t have to think twice about what brand i was going to be using. The problem where i live, which is in Canada,i can only find Coast,,The eye opener at one location, shoppers drug mart stores,i cannot find it anywhere else! so im stocking up,just in case it can’t be found anymore, Whats with the small bars???? i remember coast being a perfect rectangle blue/white marble looking bar! Does anyone know where in Canada you can find the old bars?? or are they a thing of the past, seeing as though Dial bought coast, back in 2006 i think…Ps i have tried the shower gels and i dont find the eye opener shower gel smells anything like the bar soap, and the break away coast sucks! it made my skin turn red and it became itchy and sore!….. Coast,,,,The eye opener!….. the best soap that was ever made!
OMG I didn’t know this many people cared for or love Coast (original of course) like I do too. I’ve been a “Coaster” sine 84 or so and I thought this pacific force stuff was a $1 store brand in Walgreens or something, I googled Coast and found u guys! We should protest, or throw a FPF party! Holla…
WERE CAN I GET THE ORIGINAL COAST SOAP IN THE LARGE BARS, INSTEAD OF THE SMALL 4 OZ. BARS? THEY WERE PROBABLY 6 OR 8 OZ BARS. WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THIS COMPANY?
VG
Do you really have the yellow coast soap? I would pay a pretty penny for a bar or too, please email me and let me know if you can let one or two go and how much!!! PLEASE! thanks
I can’t find original coast anywhere in NJ I wish I could just get a couple of bars if any ideas let me know also anyone remember the sunspray scent that wasn’t carried that long
I work for the company who owns dial, Henkel, I can try and go straight to the top and ask the gentleman why Dial no longer makes the coast soap, it was my soap for years too. Will get back ..
al
btw- can someone please send me some of the orignal coast ( blue)..I miss it so much..thanks!
AL I BEG you to ask you if they can bring back the yellow sunspray coast. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!
Wow,It’s funny to see so many people feeling the same way I do,I have used coast soap since the 70’s,and I have watched the bar’s get smaller and smaller, and the change in the smell and lather,it’s all about the bottom line.one would hope this company see’s they are loosing more and more business every day.come on,bring the old coast back.I guess I’m going to be forced to start using something else…………Mike Mullins
I too have been using Coast since the mid 70’s. It’s amazing to me that the “new shape” is basically the old shape with big chunks cut out of it… more profit I would suppose. I am lucky to get 2-3 showers before it breaks in half. I went to their website to let them know they are about to loose me after 30+ years of loyalty, but the site contains no contact information, customer service, etc. How dissapointing.
They can keep the new coast, but give us a chance to buy the original coast at least. It’s only fair. This new scent is not cutting it at all, it does not smell like the original coast.
Now i know why i can’t find any. Should start a boycott of dail soap. Until they bring back the coast original.
Try Nature’s Provender’s soap. You can find it at TJMaxx, if there’s one in your area (I’m in IL). I use the Oatmeal Honey bar and it’s incredible. So good I went to all the local TJmaxx stores and brought 8 bars.
They are extra large bars, at $3.99 per bar. It only takes a few rubs in a wash cloth to lather up. So much lather you could wash n rinse twice. You feel clean and you don’t get that dried out feeling you get with most in-store soaps. The scent gives you a reason to wake up in the morning. Highly recommended. I only have 2 bars left of original coast. Had to find a replacement.
Does anyone remember the gold coast soap from back in the 80s and 90s? I really loved that soap and when i called the company, they don’t even have a history of it. I remember it was my mom’s favorite soap for us in the summer because of the clean, fresh scent that wasn’t too overbearing.
I remember the yellow stuff. I still liked the original best. I don’t think they had the yellow very long though
I have been using coast pacific force for years now and finally found the arctic brand. I am desperate to find the original in the atlanta area anyone know where i can find it?????
can someone please tell me where i can buy the old coast soap @ ?
I`d enjoyed using liquid Coast Pacific Force for more than 10 years, until last week when I bought three new bottles thinking it was the original only to discover it had this horrible loud scent [some would say it smelled like an “old French whore”]. I immediately threw them in the trash can and will never buy Coast again. Maybe I`ll try Ocean Fresh if I can find it.
Hal
You struck gold my friend. I went ahead and tried a bar of the Walgreen’s Ocean Fresh. It is more moisturizing than any bar of soap I’ve used in the past 5 years, smells great, and lathers really well too. I’m hooked.
I have been stewing for the last week or so using Coast soap. I have been using it for 20 years and have always insisted on it in our home. So this morning I came online to see where I could complain and to my surprise found all you people that feel the same way I do. This new bar that’s all hollowed out to wear down and break just perturbs me. It’s like the bottom of a butter tub curves way up so the tub won’t hold nearly the volume that it looks like it should. They want to charge the same for less product. I wish they would just leave the product alone and raise the price. The new Walgreens store opens up in town in a couple weeks. I’ll be getting their brand. I only hope it isn’t made by the same people that make Coast because I don’t want to do business with people that operate like that. I hope Walgreens soap is readily available and not just something they’re getting on a special temporary buy. As with Coast when I get set on a product I stick with it so don’t screw with me !! 🙂
Check E-bay there is 48 bars up right now for $100.00. And last week someone selling 48 for $80.00 free shipping to boot. The eye opener. Coast Blue Yes in stock and in their possession to be shipped off to anyone with the price. Keep in mind sales are as is and depending on how, where and under what condition bar soap is stored you could end up with some pretty rancid stuff. Proposed recommended shelf life for bar soap is approximately 18 months to three years. Not that it can’t r won’t keep longer this is just a guideline.
MOUNTAIN DEW! Thank goodness, the original is still around. I think I would have to do something evil to Pepsi if they ever stopped making it. However, they have tried other “formulas” with “Baja Breeze” flavor at Taco Bell, Code Red, Live Wire, and Black. All sucked! There is only one Mountain Dew!
Thanks for the info concerning Walgreens brand of soap. I am going to give it a try. I just wish dial would put away their ice cream scoop, and quit carving out the bar of soap. Nothing but a rip off.
Just buy one bar of the Walgreens "Ocean Fresh " soap and try it.If you don't like it –then it is no big deal .It only cost 59 cents or 3 bars for $1.59. Let us all know what you think of the Walgreens soap.
Awesome to see so many others like me. I was just googling around trying to figure out what was going on with coast. because I also loved the original blue, and I also am not satisfied with the pacific force "knock off" The shape is clearly designed to break, forcing us to buy more, faster. I could live with that because I sooo loved the original, IF and ONLY if the pacific force was truly the same. It's NOT. The lather is clearly weaker and the scent is weaker and somehow different!
Do these corporate tycoons really believe that the people who actually use and love the original are so naive that we will not notice the differences. I don't think so, but it is all to obvious that they simply don't care!!
No more Coast for me! They changed the size (style) of the bar a few years ago and now this? I believe it's engineering at it's worst! The shape of the bar will hold water thus keeping the bar soft and not lasting as long! They need engineers that are able to figure out how to make the product cheaper, not screw the customer! Are these the type of engineers comming out of college? Is there no machining engineers anymore? Dawn dish soap did the same thing,a bottle used to last me a year now it's more like 3 months! They make it thinner with a bigger hole in the bottle and more diluted! No more of that for me either! Why change a product that is (was) good? Look what happened to Coke,or Cheerios!
I have switched to a Walgreens brand of bar soap called " Ocean Fresh Deodorant Soap". It says on the package "Compare to Coast". This soap has a wonderful smell and it feels great on your skin.It also has a normal shape ( no curved shape).Buy one bar of this soap and try it and If you don't like it you have only spent about 59 cents. I recommend this soap.If the people making the new Coast soap want to play games–then just let them–but as for me I will not use the new Coast soap. There are alternatives.
I googled "coast soap shape" because the the coast bars I've been using break in two after about 4 showers. I can't stand it. I've told my wife (who does the shopping) not to buy Coast anymore. BTW, I didn't even notice that the scent had changed. But is it my imagination or does this soap bar wear out unusually fast? Anyway, I'm going to use up what I have and switch brands. What were they thinking?
DONT MIND THE NEW SCENT BUT THE SHAPE OF THE BAR DOES NOT WORK , ITS BREAKS IN HALF AFTER THE THIRD OR FORTH USE PROBABLY WILL CHANGE BRANDS IF THIS IS NOT FIXXED
The new Coast, shaped kind of like a kidney, is a rip-off. It took me three bars to realize it but they all broke in the same place with the same volume left forcing me to toss the two pieces before I really should have had to. Whoever took over Dial Corp are shady and unprincipled. There's a few things in this world that I absolutely despise and unscrupulous disreputable businesses are one of them. I don't intend to buy anything, let alone more Coast soap from these crooks.
I am so glad there are others who miss the Original Coast Blue as much as I do!!Very disappointed with the Dial takeover. Am all for a grass root campaign to get the original back.
I have found what I believe to be a very good substitute for the original Coast. It is a bare of soap from Walgreens and it .It carries the Walgreens brad the bar of soap is entitled " Ocean Fresh" and on the front of the bar of soap it actually says "Compare to Coast ".It has a wonderful scent and feels great in the shower.I would recommend this bar of soap.
I just found out that I can't buy Coast (the original now) anymore. Wow, am I not happy. I've used that soap for so many years now, that I don't even know what else to buy. Has anyone found a good substitute? Has anyone found a good place where the original can be purchased?
Thanks!
I Googled "Coast" when no stores seemed to carry it anymore and found your site. I have allergies to most fragrances but the original Coast never bothered me. I'm also bummed out that they discontinued this great product!!!
Don't you guys wish Dial would just go ahead and sell Coast to Prestige Brands?? Prestige buys older legacy brands that the major companies don't want anymore, and brings them back…Prell Shampoo, Spic & Span, etc. I wish Dial would sell it and let Prestige bring back the Original that everybody wants! Oh well…
I had used coast soap for 20 years and was not pleased with their new design which whittled part of the bar of soap away –supposedly to fit the palm of your hand..What it really does is give you less soap for the same amount of money and what really ticks me off is when the bar of soap gets a little over half-way used –it breaks in half because it is too thin in the middle and now you have two small pieces of soap which I go not like. I called dial corporation and also sent a letter to them saying that they have lost me as a customer.I happened to find a bar of soap at Walgreens that is right beside the Coast .It is called "Ocean Fresh" and is a Walgreens brand of soap and it says on the bar of soap " Compare to Coast ".It is in the normal shape of a bar of soap and can be used right down to the last part without breaking in half .It smells great and I really like it.I recommend that you try it.
thanks missy and coastlover for your replies. i want to add that Arctic boost is NEWER than Arctic Surf… Arctic Surf was close to Pacific Force (both were stron smelling)—Arctic Boost's scent is very weak… And I agree w/you both–the lather is so minimal in all the new coast soaps. i think they discontinued arctic Surf….and replaced it with the 'suckier' arctic boost.. I just wish pacific force wasn't so drying! anyhow…i recommend Irish Spring Original for a strong scent…and it's less drying too..still, it's not as good as the coast original. otherwise, I can't find any other soaps that smell nice AND strong 🙁 ..
Does anyone know the difference between Pacific Force and Artic Boost? Which is better and closer to the Original Coast?
Pacific Force is said to be the most like the Original, but you will notice a difference (when the Original was discontinued, the Pacific Force was marketed as its replacement). Arctic Boost is a completely different fragrance. If you can't find the Original, Pacific Force is your best bet if you're looking for that kind of fragrance.
People tell me that they think that Pacific Force is similar to the Original Coast. Side by side they smell different to me and the lather that Pacific Force makes is so miniscule compared to the original.
In my opinion, it's like buying a cheap knock-off of an expensive purse.
Missy, that's a GREAT analogy! Haha! Yes, there is a total difference between the 2, although you can tell Pacific Force is based on the Original. As with every other thing these days, ingredients are changing to lower costs and products downsized. Now, what are we going to do when our Original Blue stockpiles run out?? 🙁
We too love the old coast soap and can no longer find it. We have been all over and we are down to our last bar. It is very upsetting to say the least!
I've been using Coast since 1979, the last time I bought coast it was Coast pacific blue. I was really upset, the smell was gone and it was terrible. Today I am going shopping and for the first time in 30 year's I am going to buy somthig different. Can you recommend a new soap. I feel the same way about coast.
Ed
Hey Ed,
I'm loaded up with bars of Original Coast that I've purchased around the country and received from friends and readers of this blog. I haven't found any other soap that I've liked as much, so I'm hard pressed to make a recommendation.
I recently got a pack of the "new" version of Coast Pacific Force (strong scented dark blue bars) and some bars were engraved with the "Coast" logo and some were engraved with "The Eye Opener" logo. Cute. Trying to keep things interesting, I guess. The way this new version's scent kinda reminds me of how Coast smelled before Dial started toying with it. Anyone else noticed the 2 difference bar engravings?
GC,
My advise is do not buy the new coast soap or any other Henkel / Dial Corp. product. It is amazing the items I can live without. Try Bed Bath and Beyond for a better bath bar. I refuse to pay for non value added items and will not support Henkel. Have not bought a pair of Levis since the early 80's either, but my Walmart $8.00 denims are soft and work fine. Have not drank a Coke since the formula changed.
I got a whole list of items that I have replaced with another company's item. They do not make my house payment why should I make theirs. I want quality , value added items.
Incredible! I returned to using Coast a few months ago after having fallen away from it for a number of years. I immediately noticed a difference for the worse; and said to myself that I won't buy this again. But I thought maybe it was just me or that Coast's "zing" just wasn't hitting me the way it did in the past.Turns out I'm not crazy as validated by all of you; and I guess my old sniffer's still working fine after all these years. Think I'll run a check on Irish Spring now, just out of curiosity. Joni was right— "You don't know what you got 'til it;s gone!!!"
Whatever happened to the Coast Tropical (Splash?) something version? It sems that it was on the shelves approx. 10-13 years ago It had all those tropical fruit smells, and it was really different.
Actually there was something about that version that caused a skin allergy on my legs below the knees after awhile.. I still get itchy dryness because of it , and I can scratch until my skin bleeds if I let myself. I really need to know what is in that version so I can avoid the specific allergen. I am guessing that it was one of the tropical fruits that causes me a problem. Can anyone help me get a bar or some information on that version?
Anyway I was advised by a doctor to use Dove unscented, otherwise I would still prefer to use Coast.
There was a yellow/gold colored Coast called SunSplash or something like that. Someone was selling some vintage bars on eBay recently, but the listing is no longer there. I wonder if soap that old would have retained its fragrance?
I also find Coast soap hard to hang on to and slipping out of my hands now that the center is shaved out. It also breaks in half after about 3/4 use. What's up with that? Go back to the original. In this case, change is not good. Apparently, your engineers haven't tested the new design or use it theirselves. Guess I'll have to change brands after thirty years of using a once great soap.
check walgreens, they have the older version (light blue bars) on shelves. New coast is terrible, the dark blue bars.
None of our Walgreeens or CVS' sell Original here 🙁
I’ve had to get into other soaps since I know my 40 bar stash won’t last forever 🙁
Good homemade Glycerin soaps or the oversized designer soaps are my new fetish. You can find some good bargains on ebay (click the free shipping tab on the left) or at your local tj-maxx.
Stop buying Dial products
I bought Coast soap, and there's less in a bar—down to 4 ounces–and, it's got a big dip in the middle and I find it's hard to hold on to when I'm in the shower—why do they have to change something when the original was fine?????
I too was a Coast lover, who noticed the changeover to Pacific Force, but gave up when I could not find the Original anymore. In my recollection, two things changed – the scent is subtley different, but even more important, the quality of the lather is different. I suspect they switched to cheaper ingredients. I can now by 10 bars of Pacific Force for $4. That used to get you only 3 bars of the Original back in the day.
Unfortunately for us old timers, the massive Gen-Y generation has a love affair with strongly scented body wash, and marketers have focused on them at our expense.
I hear ya…I LOVE coast Soap! Actually I DO miss the original but…Ill take whatever coast I can get! its the ONLY soap my brother in law uses too! and since I live with him and my sister i make sure we have plenty on hand. Are they still selling Arctic surf? I know I WILL BE GETTING THE 12 PACK OF ARCTIC BOOST!!! OH WELL..I STILL LOVE COAST NO MATTER THE SCENT!
I did a side-by-side comparison of the Original Blue 4.5 oz and Pacific Force 4.5 oz (of the Walgreen's special 10-packs) and found little or no difference. The Walgreen's packaging was marked 2007. The new 2008 version with all-new graphics has a similar scent, but something different — and the new 4.0 oz bars break in 2 long before the bar is done…
Larry, why after all the years that we've used caost soap, did they have to change the shape of the bar which will not stay on the shower shelf and breaks in half after only 50% of the bar is used???
It seems like the same problem we have at the food stores, everything is an ounce short or 10 instead of a dozen. Aren't we, after all these years of using the same product. entitled to the same size bars that last the life of the bar. I'm sure that someone has an answer. sudsy1279@yahoo.com
the link is not working for me. I do have a question though. I just bought 48 bars of the orginal coast blue soap on ebay. When I recived it it was a very light blue and did not smelll nearly as good as the darker blue and white mix. (not pacific force) So is this the eye opener package I am looking for?
The eBay auction had ended, that's why the link stopped working. I believe the darker blue one that you're referring to is "The Eye Opener" version, which I can hardly ever get my hands on.
Just found some on eBay. I'm well stocked for the next 2 years or so. So in case anyone wants them, here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/cr5oud
I am an obsessed original coast soap junkie as well. I just can’t get enough of the smell. I became a user about 10 years ago. I am so glad to know there are others out their. I was going through four packs every week. I don’t shower with it (dries my skin) but I put a bar in the shower so I can smell it while I shower. I have a bar in my car, two bars at the office (one next to my computer monitor) to sniff throughout the day and a back up in my desk drawer, a bar by my night stand for those middle of the night urges and one in the living room (just in case). I have emailed the company with no response back. It seems like if they aren’t going to make it anymore why can’t they release the ingredients to the public and maybe someone else will make it (or maybe we could make it ourselves).
I was so happy to find other (original) coast addicts. For the last 10 years I buy a whole packet of coast which lasts about two weeks total. I don’t shower my skin with it but I hang the bars in the shower so they get wet and unleash their awesome sent. I also keep fresh bars on my nightstand , in my car and next to my computer monitor at work. It is a kind of aromatherpy for me. The smell is so awesome it makes me forget about stress or anything. I have been searching for a replacement but nothing exists. I am taking your advice and stocking up.
I am a pregnant woman craving Coast Blue…Not Pacific Force…It smells so good I makes my mouth water!!! and It's no where to be found! I just ran out, just weeks ago I bought 3 bars at my local Dollar store. I didn't realize it is no longer made….I really really want some any ideas? ebay was no help.

I was happy tp find this site! My family couldn't understand why Coast would change that terrific scent. That's why we buy it. There is NO scent in the new stuff, even while showering. I just wrote to the company, and told them I'm looking for a new soap if I can't have my original Coast.. Seems a German company bought Dial and a bunch of other companies. I think everybody should write to the company and complain. Life without Coast, seems depressing..
I just told my son I am having a problem finding Coast soap. He say's, get on the web pop and find out what's the problem. Now I know. NO Dial products for this family. Screw them
I wanted to say That I love coast.. Their bodywash is the bet and I will never use any other kind!!!
where did you find coast in a bodywash? I wanted to write to the company to request that.
What is with whittling away half of the bar of soap? Is this supposed to pass for some cockamaimie ergonomic design? My ass!! it's their way of charging you the same money for less soap.
DO NOT BUY IT!!

My husband and I use Coast Aloe Vera soap and I just had to have it last year after I couldn’t find it in stores. I DID find it on Amazon.com and ordered a boatload. But, NOW, I cannot find it anywhere – not even on ebay. RATS!
OMG! I have been going crazy trying to get the BLUE. I wrote Dial 4 times and they ignored me. Finally they responded and told me that the Original Blue holds a new name and it is the same. My response. ITS NOT THE SAME, Not even close! It F’n Sucks! I dont think i will hear back from them. I have used that coast since i was a rug rat! so sad to see it go.

Original Coast Blue available by the case on eBay. Just search for: Original Coast Blue
Hi! I totally understand your Coast original obsession. I LOVE the original myself. I called the Dial company today and the person on the telephone told me the only difference between the new version and the old version was the packaging. NONSENSE! Any ideas on why they would say that when the new formula is not even close to the old? I bought a couple of cases on ebay but am looking to purchase more. Any ideas? We should start a grass roots campaign to have the original brought back! Thanks for your post!
Coast original blue just disappeared!! It had been my favorite soap and as you know, its gone..the last ones I found were about 9 months ago at a dollar store. needless to say I bought a few packages but they are now gone. Yes, I have showered since then..I look for miracles though and hope dial realizes the winner they had and one day when I walk down the soap aisle, with my eyes peaking through my hands covering my face, in hope of being coastfully clean, I will see it again. I also have a thing for Lorna Doones. They are awesome cookies..
I too love the orig. coast soap. I like your of getting a lifetime supply. Where can I buy some? I’m going to write the pres. of the company tonight and complain about the fact that I can no longer find it.
I did find 6 bars in a Walgreen’s a few weeks ago. It looked older, but I was glad to get it.
I have another 70 bars of Coast Original Blue!
