Rollin’ Round BlogWorld Expo 2008

  • by Missy Ward

I just finally got back to Gate B2 at McCarran airport after dragging my exhausted butt on crutches across the hall to get some frozen yogurt from TCBY. To add insult to injury, as I finally sat down to dig into my White Chocolate Mousse with Heath Bar Crunch, I realized that the lady behind the counter did not give me a damn spoon. So as I type this post, I am squeezing my cup of yougurt and sticking my tongue in it, to avoid schlepping all the way back there.

I learned a few things during this trip, most of which have to do with how folks in wheel chairs are treated by some people, but I will save that for another post. Let's just say that it was great to have my friends Shawn Collins, Connie Berg, Lisa Picarile, Tris Hussey and TrishaLyn, Billy Kay, Jim Kukral and a few others, around to help out. Sorry 'bout your toes…

Anyway…. Shawn and I hosted an Affiliate Summit dinner at Chinois, on Friday night. 40 people were confirmed / 35 showed up. Mr. & Mrs. John Chow, Zac Johnson and his girlfriend, Steve Hall, Ian Fernando and Shawn dined at my table.

Note to the folks that didn't show up (you know who you are): John Chow, Zac Johnson and I ate your dinners, too. We figured, what the hell — they were already paid for. Blogposts, wine and a nice lunch in Orlando should make up for it. 😉

I shared my story of how I fractured my foot, Tweeting and Walking. John Chow promptly labeled it the World's First Highly Pubilicized Twitter Accident.

After dinner we rolled over to the Tech Set party at Bare. It was fun and crowded. A little too crowded for the likes of my scooter, so we bailed a little early.

I attended a few sessions on Saturday, and I especially liked the Affiliate Marketing panel with Mike Allen, Tim Jones and Shawn Collins. It was pleasing to see how much room there is for Affiliate Marketing as a lot of Bloggers in attendance have never even contemplated its use when it comes to monetizing their blogs.

A few of us dined in the Mexican Restaurant inside the Hilton for dinner. I kind of felt like I held back my friends from going other places because I couldn't get around so easy. But they seemed to be ok with it — or they just felt sorry for me.

After dinner we went over to the Blog World party inside the Hilton as well, only to discover that the same food that we ate at the Mexican Restaurant was provided to the party-goer's for free at the party. Live and Learn.

I ended the night with Michael Buechele, Connie Berg and Karen Garcia over a glass of wine and some funny conversation.

While I wanted to head back to BlogWorld today, I just didn't have it in me. Between repacking, returning the scooter and getting to the airport – heading to the Convention Center to make a session just seemed out of reach.

I did snap quite a few pictures of the weekend. Click on the picture below to check them out.

Obama Tests Out Political Text Messaging

  • by Missy Ward

Nothing intrigues me more than watching traditional marketing folks begin to test out social media and new technologies.

Over the last year, we’ve watched the Presidential candidates challenge time-honored campaign fundraising tactics and information distribution by taking their show to the Web. Social media and networking components have been wildly expanding and seemingly, now essential, to the candidates’ successes.

Barack Obama is no stranger to the new technologies bandwagon. He has successfully managed to reach the broadest audience through numerous social networks, YouTube videos, widgets, banners, wallpaper and even ringtones.

A few weeks ago, Obama’s campaign decided to give yet another new technology –text messaging — a whirl. His “Here’s My VP” political text message was intended to reach 2.9 million people. By many accounts, it was the single largest mobile marketing event in the United States and the first mass-scale effective usage of political text messaging.

Or was it?

While Obama’s first political text messaging campaign was nothing less than an uber-powerful memorandum to the McCain camp that he’s got technology on his side and he’s not afraid to use it, the campaign itself in essence, was a failure.

Besides the fact, that the political text message was sent out at 3:00am EDT – a time in which most folks are asleep, it has been indicated by many news agencies that approximately 40-50% of the messages were received late or not at all.

Moreover, there are upwards of 170+ million registered voters, 70+ million of them are registered Democrats, 55+ million are registered Republicans and the other 40+ million are registered as independents. T o me, sending out a political text message to less than 2% of the registered voters, is an exercise in futility, if you’re trying to generate buzz.

In my opinion, smart politics, combined with smart marketing, would have been a better tactical maneuver in this situation. It would have made more sense that Obama’s campaign would have worked with a company like SMSPolitical.com to leverage their campaign database and political text messaging service to get this cutting-edge message out to all the potential voters out there. SMSPolitical.com boasts cell phone numbers for over 19+ million registered Democrats and over 84+ million total voters. Talk about mass-scale communication to the most coveted form of contact!

Today, Obama once again, used text messaging to his advantage. While the Republicans were asleep at the wheel once more, Obama used political text messaging and email to raise donations for Hurricane Aid to help the Gulf Coast get through Hurricane Gustav.

It will be interesting to see if the McCain camp and other political interest groups latch on to this technology and begin to experiment with text message campaigns themselves. Hopefully they will be smarter and work with a company that actually knows how to get the messages through and most importantly, knows not to send them in the middle of the night ;-p

CoLab Orlando Open House

  • by Missy Ward

Last night, I took a trip downtown for the CoLab Orlando Open House. CoLab Orlando, which is due to open in October, will be a coworking venue for Otown's technology and creative community.

The space is in the historic Angebilt building on Orange Avenue and from what I've seen, it couldn't be more appropriate. There is coworking space available starting at $225 per month, to office suites starting at $625 per month. The pricing includes internet and use of a conference room in which to have meetings.

Etan Horowitz did a nice recap of the event and included all of the space options and pricing.

I've been working at home for nearly 6 years and to be quite honest, a co-working space would be perfect for me. It would get me out of the house a couple of days a week and give me an opportunity to network with like-minded individuals.

Case-in-point: After the open-house I scooted downstairs to Finnhenry's with Sterling and Elizabeth from NFIStudios.com and caught up with what's going on with their company and their MemberFuse Social Networking Platform. Over a couple of drinks we caught up on what's going on around town and chatted about Doterati and how we were looking forward to seeing it grow. This entire conversation would have never happened, if I were sitting back in my office at home.

I think the only drawback for me at CoLab is that it's missing an “Administrative Services” offering. I really could use things like access to a printer, fax, someone to answer my phones, etc. But as I understand it, the folks at CoLab are willing to listen to what the community needs. Hopefully, they'll hear me :-p

Here are some pictures of the space:

AffRock @ Rock-Fest 2008

  • by Missy Ward

Connie Berg of FlamingoWorld.com is one of the sponsors of Rock-Fest in Cadott, WI. She asked me if I'd like to spend 4 days in an RV and check out a bunch of bands. At first, I was a little nervous about the whole R/V, port-o-potty, icky shower, sweaty drunk people thing, but I had a blast!

Here are my pictures of the entire event and movies are on the way.

Thanks Connie for inviting me and I hope I get to go again next year!
