Seven Common Pitfalls New Affiliates Should Avoid

  • by Missy Ward

If you're new to affiliate marketing, you're probably already up to your ears in “new stuff” that you need to learn, which can be somewhat overwhelming.

On top of everything else, you also need to get your arms around things that you really should avoid, so that your efforts aren't for naught.

I put together this video to help out with that. These are some affiliate pitfalls that I wish someone would have shared with me when I first started out. It would have saved me a lot of time, frustration and money.

It's part of a series that my business partner Shawn and I are developing to assist new affiliate marketers with their business. Here is the first one that Shawn created, entitled “Making Money Online With Affiliate Programs.”

It's our sincere hope that you find a golden nugget in these videos that will make your life a little easier.

If you've been in the business for a while and would like to offer up some other tips, please feel free to post a comment below. It's good karma 😉

Missy Ward (@missyward) of Affiliate Summit moderated this week with panelists:

  • Connie Berg (@connieberg), Head Bird in Charge of FlamingoWorld.com
  • Lisa Picarille (@lisap), a consultant focusing on online marketing, social media and content creation
  • Karen White (@KarenWhite_LV), a Marketing Strategist focusing on Performance marketing initiatives

Photo of Andrew WeeAndrew Wee (@andrewwee), who is an internet marketing consultant, affiliate marketer and blogger on WhoIsAndrewWee.com, was our special guest this week.

Andrew joins us from 12 hours in the future, Hiro Nakamura-style from Singapore (that's 10,000+ miles away, a 20-hour plane ride or a mere .5 second jaunt for those of you that can travel at the speed of light.)

The topics that were spewed today were:

  • How the convergence of social media and affiliate marketing has helped us embark on a new age of international collaboration.
  • Making the world your market – why businesses need to focus on their international marketing strategies and things to prepare for to make it happen.
  • International Affiliate Recruitment Strategies for Merchants.
  • The trends, issues and challenges in the Asian market and how the social media space is shaping up in Andrew’s neck of the woods.
  • The ubiquitous dilemma of merging or excluding one’s personal life when it comes to business, and how it all plays out on Twitter or Facebook.
  • The fine line between authenticity and stupidity on Twitter
  • Why women make better podcasters then men.
  • FeedFront Magazine is now available for the Kindle.
  • Lisa's upcoming op-ed piece in the San Francisco Chronicle on California's AB178.
  • Connie's breaking news on the Minnesota Omnibus Bill #advertisingtax.

Izea Raises the Bar; Introduces Disclosure Audits

  • by Missy Ward

Image of raising the bar I just finished reading Ted Murphy's announcement on the Izea blog regarding their new disclosure audit capability, and had a few thoughts on this that I wanted to share.

I wondered to myself whether Izea's adversaries, would look at this strategic move as simply “window dressing” to appease sponsored conversation critics, like Andy Sernovitz. Or, would the next-gen marketers be the only people that realize what Izea is doing is nothing short of solidifying their position in this area by setting the standards bar higher and meeting it every time?

Let's face it, if the disclosure and transparency procedures that Izea has implemented are adopted by the bloggers on their network and if compliance is strictly monitored, there is nothing that their critics can do except stomp on their sour grapes and make wine. Any other retort using the words “disclosure or transparency”, would be “so 2006.”.

I commend Izea for taking the steps necessary to be ahead of the curve and conform to the industry guidelines that have been set forth.

What say you?

(Oh, and yes.. in the interest of disclosure, like I say here, I sit on Izea's Advisory Board in good company of other futurists.)
