Of Golf and Affiliate Marketing

  • by Matt_McWilliams

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones said, “You are the same today as you’ll be in five years, except for two things, the people you meet and the books you read.”

For affiliates, perhaps it could be worded, “You are the same today as you’ll be in five years, except for the people you follow on Twitter, the posts you read in forums, and the blogs you peruse.”

I grew up playing golf and one of the lessons I learned as a kid was from the late instructor, Harvey Penick.

“Don’t go to dinner with bad putters.”

What? How does that apply to business or marketing or well… anything outside of golf?

What Penick was saying was that if you want to be a great putter, hang out with great putters. Penick was suggesting that to learn more about putting and developing the right mindset for success, you must associate with great putters. Go to dinner with them. Practice with them. Pick their brains and observe their attitudes, preparation, and routine.

The same goes for learning or improving at anything. If you want to learn how to develop a great marriage, hang out with people who have been happily married for 10+ years, not your two college buddies who recently got divorced. If you want to get into better physical shape, hang out with people who are active and eat healthy, and stop meeting your pals for greasy burgers and fries for lunch.

If you want to be successful in affiliate marketing, stop hanging out with affiliates who whine all the time about the industry, their merchants, or their performance. Quit reading posts from people who discourage you. Quit associating with friends who tell you that you need to get a “real job.”

Instead, find people who have a positive attitude about affiliate marketing and support you in your efforts. Find people who have been doing this for a while, had their ups and downs, failures and successes, and associate with those people. Find members at a forum like ABestWeb who are positive and helpful and read their posts.

In your personal life, make sure that your friends and family support you. They should understand that you are working; not playing on the computer all day, and that you are committed to being successful. If they remain unsupportive or critical, they have one of two choices: get on board or get out of the way. That means you may have to end some friendships or avoid certain people until their attitude improves.

You must make the choice to fill your mind with knowledge from people who make you feel better, inspire you, and teach you how to improve. It will have a huge impact on your current and future success.

Affiliate Summit Mentor Program is now the Newcomer Program

  • by Jen_Goode

Over the past few years a number of fantastic volunteers have stepped up to help first time attendees find their way around Affiliate Summit conferences. Throughout the process there have been invaluable experiences and connections made.

Consistently, participants have come to me sharing their stories and gratitude for the program. Great connected have started through this program, both for business as well as lasting friendships. Yet through all the positive feedback there has been a reoccurring problem… “mentor” implies to many that there is training or consulting involved. Mentees expected business coaching and mentors were stuck in the position of wanting to help but not being able to help as much as their first timer might hope.

So as a way to help alleviate this problem, we’ve taken out the word mentor. Same great program, with hopefully a clearer perspective of purpose.

Affiliate Summit Newcomer Program

The Affiliate Summit Newcomer Program is provided to help first time attendees gain a better understanding of what to expect when attending the conference. The volunteers offer their time and past experience knowledge to help newcomers optimize their time at the event.

I hope you’ll join us for another great event!

If you’d like to participate as a volunteer or you are planning on attending the show for the first time, signup for the Affiliate Summit Newcomer Program today!

Free Your Feet; Liberate Your Soles! (And Maybe Win…

  • by Missy Ward

For those that know me well, you know that I'm seldom ever seen in public without at least being 5′ 9″ tall (and typically closer to 5′ 11″).

Truth be known, I'm barely 5′ 5″ tall and I have an *extreme* shoe obsession, which encompasses all types of beauties in a plethora of heel heights and shapes.

Many women (and men) are quite curious how I manage to spend countless hours on my feet, walking trade show floors during the day and partying it up at night, without shedding one tear. My guess is that after wearing heels for decades, one just gets used to them.

A couple months ago during a conference, Hagai Yardeny, a partner in DigitalMoses.com and a dear friend of mine, tried hard to convince me to ditch the heels and pop on a pair of Chuck's with my suit. ( I'm convinced it's one of those freaky fetish things with him.) While I was not complaining one bit about my feet, my Manolo Blahnik Caged Strappy Sandals, seemed to bother him immensely and together, we began to watch the other women in the conference drag by, crippled in pain from their shoes.

We both agreed that there seemed to be a double-standard when it comes attire at conferences.  Women typically show up in smart business attire and heels, while our male counterparts tend to dress much more casually and  cruise on by in comfy, rubber soles.

So, determined to impart his belief that “fashion is overrated” onto women in our industry, Hagai created the Chucks Challenge — a way for women to embrace their inner “techniness” and join the comfort movement.

His goal is to get the women of ad:tech to abandon convention and wear Chuck Taylor sneakers for the duration of the conference, to be as comfortable as the guys — if only for a few days.

The Digital Moses team will be walking around ad:tech photographing all the ladies bold enough to accept the Chucks Challenge. From this crop of adventurous women, they will randomly select 3 lucky winners who will receive one of the following prizes:

  • A full company profile in the DM Confidential affiliate newsletter
  • A “Tips of the Week” slot in the DM Confidential affiliate newsletter
  • An Apple iPad

Think you have what it takes to enter the Chucks Challenge?.

Head on over to http://www.dmconfidential.com/ChucksChallenge/ and complete the entry form.

Will I be wearing my Chuck's during ad:tech?  Let me know what you think.

Save the Date: Affiliate Summit unConference in Orlando on…

  • by Missy Ward

Affiliate Summit is organizing an unConference on Monday, September 27 in Orlando, FL – the Affiliate Summit unConference brought to you by SeaWorld.

If you're not familiar with an unConference, it's a whole different format from a typical Affiliate Summit.

While we are organizing things, it will be a participant-driven conference centered on Internet marketing. So the agenda is shaped by the attendees.

The price will be only$10 a person for networking, lunch, and educational sessions.

The event is taking place at SeaWorld in the same spot IZEAFest was in last year – Ports of Call.

IZEAfest 2009 009

There will be a special day at SeaWorld the day before the unConference, and we will be making a limited number of free passes to SeaWorld available for that day.

Stay tuned for more details on the Affiliate Summit unConference brought to you by SeaWorld.
